Electric Scooty in Hyderabad โ India's costliest petrol city just got a cheaper ride.
Omaha electric scooters: 15+ models, 70โ80 km range, and no licence, registration or insurance to deal with. Built for Hyderabad's slow traffic and steep fuel prices.

The core problem
Hyderabad has the most expensive petrol of any Indian metro
Telangana charges 35.20% VAT on petrol โ the steepest state VAT in the country. Here's how a litre compares across metros:
On an HPCL break-up (1 June 2026), the dealer base price was โน82.14 and Telangana VAT alone added โน28.99 on top of it. When the Centre cut excise duty in March 2026, Telangana did not pass the benefit down by reducing VAT โ so the gap over Delhi (~โน102/L) simply held.

A real Hyderabad commute
A schoolteacher in Malkajgiri did something in April that most Hyderabadis never bother doing. She opened the Notes app on her phone and started logging every petrol fill for her Activa โ date, amount, odometer reading. Her commute is Malkajgiri to a school near Paradise Circle and back, about 31 kilometres a day, six days a week.
Three months later the maths was uncomfortable. In Hyderabad's stop-start traffic her scooter was returning about 38 kmpl, not the 55 the showroom had promised. At โน115.69 a litre she was burning roughly โน94 every working day. Add the Sunday errands, the vacation trips to Uppal, two services and a tyre change, and the year was heading past โน32,000 โ a month's income spent on nothing but movement.
She now rides an Omaha Starling Neo. Her electricity bill went up by about โน340 a month. Nothing else changed โ same route, same timings, same traffic on the Tarnaka flyover.
Her story is not unusual. It is just unusually well documented. Across Kukatpally, Dilsukhnagar, Attapur and Miyapur, the same calculation is being done on the back of chai-shop bills every single day.
Two costs stacked on top of each other
Expensive fuel plus slow traffic
Most cities have one of these problems. Hyderabad has both โ and together they are exactly the condition where an electric scooty wins fastest.
Costliest fuel
โน115.69/ litre
A 5-litre fill costs about โน578 in Hyderabad vs โน511 in Delhi. Over a year of weekly fills, a Hyderabad rider pays roughly โน3,500 more for the exact same distance โ and that gap isn't closing.
Slowest roads
18.4kmph avg
Among the world's ten slowest large cities. A petrol engine idling in a jam burns fuel to produce nothing; an electric motor at a standstill draws almost zero. The slower the city, the wider the running-cost gap.
Why the switch is accelerating
Hyderabad by the numbers
The market has already noticed. Expensive fuel plus gridlocked roads are pushing Telangana ahead of the national EV curve.
registered vehicles in Hyderabad, including 65.5 lakh two-wheelers (Feb 2026)
vehicle density on major roads, up from ~6,500 in 2019 โ about 1,500 new vehicles added daily
lost per commuter every year in traffic; peak-hour speed drops to 16.1 kmph
Telangana 2-wheeler EV penetration vs 7.8% national (Q4 FY25-26, Vahan)
new EV registrations in FY 2025-26, worth โน6,297 crore
total EVs now on Telangana roads
public EV charging points within GHMC limits
vehicles projected in Hyderabad by 2027-28 โ the roads only get slower

Telangana EV policy โ the honest version
What you actually get in Hyderabad (and what you don't)
What it does NOT give you
- No direct cash purchase subsidy on electric two-wheelers, unlike Delhi or Maharashtra. If a showroom promises you subsidy cash, be sceptical.
- The road-tax & registration waiver applies to registered (high-speed) EVs only, and is set to expire 31 December 2026.
What you DO get
- 100% road tax & registration fee exemption on registered EVs (G.O.Ms.No.41, 16 Nov 2024), under the wider Telangana EV & Energy Storage Policy 2020โ2030 โ real money, so make sure it's on your on-road invoice.
- Most Omaha models are slow-speed EVs: no registration, no RC, no licence โ so there's no road tax to begin with. You get the benefit by default, and it doesn't expire with the policy.
One honest caveat: slow-speed scooties are built for city speeds. If your daily run involves the ORR at 60 kmph, this is the wrong product โ any good dealer will tell you so.
Built in India, sized for Hyderabad
Three things that map onto how Hyderabad actually rides
Omaha Electric is a unit of JVG Electric Private Limited โ headquartered in Hisar, Haryana, with manufacturing in Haryana and West Bengal. Every scooter is designed and assembled in India, which is really a spare-parts argument: a domestic part reaches your Kukatpally dealer in days, not the four-to-six weeks an imported component takes.
No licence, no registration, no insurance
Walk into a showroom, pick a model, pay, ride home โ no RTO file at Khairatabad, no agent, no smart-card wait. For students at Osmania and JNTU, homemakers, seniors and first-time riders, this is the whole reason they buy.
70โ80 km range covers almost any Hyderabad commute
Miyapur to HITEC City and back with margin, or Dilsukhnagar to Ameerpet with the evening detour. Charge overnight from an ordinary 5-amp plug โ lithium 3โ5 hrs, lead-acid 6โ8 hrs. No queuing at a public charger.
Compact bodies for compact lanes
Near Charminar, Begum Bazaar, Moosarambagh or old Secunderabad, a wide scooter is a daily punishment. Active Mini, Starling Neo and Starling Round are light and narrow enough to thread through galis and park in the gap a car left behind.
15+ models
An Omaha for every kind of Hyderabad rider
A delivery rider on the GachibowliโKondapur loop and a retired officer riding from Vanasthalipuram to the temple don't need the same machine. Every model comes with both lead-acid and lithium options โ the choice is yours, not the brand's.
No models in this category yet.
The daily reality
What it actually costs to run โ in Hyderabad's own numbers
A typical rider covers 30โ40 km a day. In real traffic averaging 18 kmph, a 110cc petrol scooter returns roughly 38โ45 kmpl โ not the 55โ60 the brochure quotes.
Petrol scooter
Roughly โน90โ120 a day at โน115.69/L โ and that's before servicing, engine oil, air filters and the annual pollution certificate.
Omaha electric
About 1.2โ1.5 units of electricity a day, roughly โน10โ15. Annual running cost stays comfortably under โน5,000.
A reality check on price: third-party trade listings have shown Omaha models in the โน45,000โโน61,000 range depending on model and battery โ for example the Canary and Starling R around โน46,000โโน49,000, and the Swallow around โน61,000. Treat these as indicative only; actual on-road pricing in Hyderabad varies by dealer, battery choice, colour and current offers, so confirm with the showroom.
Over three years
Petrol scooter fuel
โน1,08,000
Omaha electricity
โน13,000
A Hyderabad rider spending โน3,000/month on petrol pays out โน1,08,000 in fuel alone over three years. The same rider on an Omaha pays roughly โน13,000 in electricity. That gap is larger than the price of several Omaha models โ before you even count the servicing, oil, filters and PUC you no longer pay for.
Why Omaha
Why Omaha over other electric scooty brands in Hyderabad
Zero paperwork
No licence, RC, insurance or dependence on a policy deadline. High-speed brands legally can't offer this.
Made-in-India parts
Spares are manufactured domestically, so service turnaround in Hyderabad is measured in days, not weeks.
15+ models, not 3
Choose what fits your street and your load โ not whatever the brand happened to launch this year.
Both battery types
Lead-acid for a lower entry price, lithium for lighter weight and faster charging. Most brands force one on you.
Real features
Hydraulic suspension, dual disc brakes, anti-theft alarm, USB port, digital meter, LED headlamp across the range.
Genuine commercial range
300โ350 kg loaders too โ rare in slow-speed EVs, and ideal for Hyderabad's dense small-trade economy.
Riders across the city
What Hyderabad riders say
Sample cards โ swap in real customer quotes and localities before publishing.
"My Activa was eating โน3,000 a month. Since switching to the Omaha, my petrol bill is basically gone โ just a bit more on the electricity. Same Kukatpally-to-work route, zero paperwork."
"The lanes near Malakpet are so narrow a big scooter is a nightmare. The Starling is small and light โ I can park it anywhere. And no licence hassle was a big relief."
"I do parcel delivery around Dilsukhnagar โ 70-80 km some days. On petrol it was killing my earnings. One overnight charge covers my whole shift now."

How to buy
Buy an Omaha in Hyderabad in five steps
- 1
Find your nearest dealer
Check the dealer section on omahaev.com or call +91 99961 17882 for the closest showroom โ Kukatpally, Dilsukhnagar, Secunderabad, Attapur, LB Nagar, Uppal or the western IT belt.
- 2
Test ride on your own road
This matters more in Hyderabad. If your route climbs towards Banjara Hills or Jubilee Hills Road No. 45, ride the model on that slope first. Tell the dealer your exact daily kilometres so they steer you between lead-acid and lithium correctly.
- 3
Complete the purchase
For slow-speed models there's no registration file, no insurance formality and no RTO visit. Pay, take delivery, ride out.
- 4
Set up charging properly
Confirm a working 5-amp socket where you park. In an apartment in Manikonda, Nizampet or Kompally, clear a stilt-parking socket with your association before delivery โ easier settled beforehand.
- 5
Buying a registered high-speed EV instead?
Ask the dealer to apply the Telangana road-tax and registration-fee exemption directly on the invoice, and get it in writing. That waiver runs until 31 December 2026.
Want to sell Omaha, not just ride one? Dealership from approximately โน5โ6 lakh โ one of the lowest entry points in the Indian EV market, and Telangana's Tier-2 towns are among the fastest-growing 2W EV markets in the country.
